Monday evening, sixteen Paupers answered Shadowmoor‘s call, lining up along the walls of the BPDCCOM Conference Center. (Sixteen is quite a bit below the 28 present for BPDC 1.01′s Kamigawa kickoff, but I’ll chalk it up to the incredible popularity of that favorite of blocks…) SypherSun warned me before registration even began that new match tables and sideboarding had been lagging, but little did we know that the BPDCCOM Conference Center, and indeed the entire framework of MTGO v3, seemed to be under assault from a wrecking ball. Or so it felt. However, the patient and even-tempered among us waited through the ridiculous lag to eventually crown a champion of BPDC 3.01 — Boin, piloting “Warrior Sligh.”

Before moving into Lorwyn-Shadowmoor Block, let’s take a second to reflect on some wisdom shared with the community by the victor and near-victor of BPDC Season 2.

The Monday Mulligan: Shadowmoor, what to get?

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

I will not list every card in Shadowmoor, as always there are a lot of bad and unplayable cards here. I’ll try to go over every card that has potential or seems to have but hasn’t. A full visual spoiler of Shadowmoor Commons (and Lorwyn/Morningtide) can be found here. Read on!
Disclaimer: I’m talking about Standard playability only!

Running the Numbers #32

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Looks like its time for another TPDC wrap up. When last I covered the event, we were at 8.7. Now three more events have gone in the books. Steady is the theme of TPDC right now with the same decks doing well each week. This can be a large group as the large Classic pool lends itself to diversity, but overall we are seeing consistent fields and leaders each week.

The Monday Mulligan: Morningtide Standard Decks

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Garfield Monday (2).jpgGarfield Monday (2).jpg
Due to the casual event at MPDC this week (which was incredibly buggy but a lot of fun) there is no Standard metagame to discuss. Therefore I will go over all decks that have done well in Standard last season and what Shadowmoor cards you will need to acquire. This way you will have some small hints to the new Standard.
Most of this you, as regulars, will already know. But I’m trying to make something I can point new players to if they want to know what to expect. I also used a lot of old material to describe the decks, because I talked about almost every deck in Standard at some point.

If you’re anything like me (which you’re not, but stay with me here) then you’re extremely pumped about the biggest Block format yet in the history of Magic. You’re needlessly stoked about seeing how the tribal cards sprinkled throughout Shadowmoor will enhance the groundwork laid by Lorwyn and Morningtide. You’re also geeked (perhaps more literally than you’d like) about trying out decks in previously non-competitive color pairs that Shadowmoor‘s hybrid cards now support. (If your favorite color pair isn’t represented in Shadowmoor, never fear — Eventide will come to your rescue. Be patient.)
Even if you’re not like me, you’re going to want to give this block format a shot. As I mentioned above, Shadowmoor‘s addition to Lorwyn and Morningtide will produce the game’s largest Block environment to date. It will have themes and mechanics that crosshatch and weave together like no block before. Also, and perhaps most importantly, this block format will give the PDC community its first glance at the new Standard format coming our way this fall after the rotation occurs.
Let’s take a closer look at how the addition of Shadowmoor will shake up the Block metagame by making some archetypical predictions based on the tools given to us by this outstanding new set. Buckle up, gentle Paupers, and read on!

The Monday Mulligan: Week 23, Championship

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Garfield Monday (2).jpgGarfield Monday (2).jpg
Thirteen. Thirteen players attended the MPDC Season 2 Championship. We had twentyfive last week, why the drop in numbers? Well, never mind, the event was still a blast. Because of real life issues I couldn’t host, so stiffdiddypinky substituted for me, while I registered twenty minutes late. Hosting didn’t obstruct his play though, because stiff won the Championship, piloting White Weenie to a 4-1 record. This season’s runner up was yogev, who played Elves! to their best performance yet, a silver 3-1 record.
Also in this edition of The Monday Mulligan; no more “maby” instead of “maybe” and no more “of coarse” instead of “of course”!
