Karakusk Wins SPDC 4.03! (New power rankings!)

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Standard took a week off last week with both events being canceled. But we’re back!
And it took less than 4 hours to determine a winner in last Thursday night SPDC. Why, you might ask? Certainly not because of the popularity of aggro decks, but certainly because of their success.
Out of 22 players, only 6 ran pure aggro decks, but 3 made it to the quarterfinals crushing opposition in the process!

ALT PDC 1.01 – Metagame Report

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

The format was Build You own Standard where players would pick one core set and two blocks and build a deck. Ravnica was the block of the day. The entire top 4 played it and only six people played it total. And what did people use Ravnica for? Well some people used it for silly things like Pillory of Sleeplessness and Scab clan mauler. But the top two players used it for saps.

Running The Numbers # 7

Classic is a strange animal. With such a large pool, there will be weeks where you have no idea what will show up or end up on top. This past Saturday was one such week. Peek inside to see how it unfolded.

Magic Menagerie – Mono-Color in Future Extended

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Magic Menagerie makes another of its sporadic appearances in honor of PDCMagic.com’s debut. This time my focus shifts back to Future Extended, where we have recently seen multiple successes by mono-color decks. What advantages and disadvantages do these decks have over more common multi-color decks? How are these advantages and disadvantages different in Future Extended than they are in Standard, where mono-color decks are rarely seen? Find those answers and more inside, as I break down what makes a mono-color deck tick!

TWIFE #4 – Power Decks

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Welcome to This Week in Future Extended, an article series intended to follow the Future Extended metagame as seen through XPDC and UPDC events in the Lorwyn Season.
“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” — that seemed to be the credo of a fair number of players at XPDC 1.03, with Spore Cry and Xtra Crispy (strangely) being played in multiples, Affinity and Martyr Control hiding in dark corners, and a deftly-piloted Orzhov Blink and a weenie-heavy Blue Beats variant soaring their way to the top of the heap. On Sunday, the Izzet Boilerworks were hoppin’, and control was back in a big way — especially the Raspberry kind.
Put on your berets, Princes and other Paupers, and we’ll have a look at this week’s metagame and also talk a bit about the Future Extended format as a whole, looking at what I’ll call the “Power Decks” of the format.

Running The Numbers #6

Blue, Black, RGW, what colors would the winner be sporting this week. Also, this big question for me was would the Tuesday event use Saturday’s lessons learned to pave a different road or would we see more of the same from the players that we have through the first few weeks of this young season. Only one way to see…

Running The Numbers #5

The Saturday Event was a little small this week. Hopefully that was an aberattion as it appears we will need to muster all our strength to unseat MUC from the top spot. See what happened through 5 tough rounds of action inside.

TWIFE #3

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Welcome to This Week in Future Extended, an article series intended to follow the Future Extended metagame as seen through XPDC and UPDC events in the Lorwyn Season.
Surprise, surprise… the XPDC metagame took a turn for the Sap-unfriendly, and I got out just in the nick of time! An exciting week for Future Extended, as Kaityson36 sealed the deal and snagged Affinity its first gold medal at XPDC 1.02, and on Sunday, amidst a swarm of Saprolings enough to sicken anyone with any sense, the B/G incarnation “Prison Yard” piloted by Eegag made a triumphant UPDC debut.
Let’s do some analysis of the metagame and see where trends are pointing going into the holiday week.

KINGRITZ WINS SPDC 4.02! (And new power rankings)

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I don’t think there is a stronger combo than Momentary Blink and Mulldrifter in Standard today. And while it is too early to say for sure, it sure looks like it’s going to be Mulldrifter Season.
21 players showed up last Thursday for SPDC 4.02 and while Blinkdrifter did not succeed in defending its crown as the top deck, it’s this BWUr version that did.
