Extended Stay *#1*

Hello, and welcome to Extended Stay!
ChronicHeaves here, and I’ll be bringing you your weekly fix of all things ‘Future Extended’ (or ‘FutExt’ to the hipsters). I’m excited to be able to bring you tournament coverage, deck analysis, deck building, metagame information, and anything else you, the readers, are interested to hear. Future Extended is a wonderful format, full of innovation and intrigue. With a large card pool, but without the price concerns sometimes associated with Classic, the format is sort of like a PDC parallel to Legacy. You get access to many powerful strategies, and as you can see from the results of our steadily growing tournaments, you also get a format wide open in terms of deck building and deck parity. With a stunning number of viable archtypes, it’s no wonder it’s a format on the rise.

WE WANT UPDC

The turnout was quite low again this week. I’m starting to wonder if PDC’ers just plain don’t play Magic on the weekends. The metagame we have been seeing in previous UPDC weeks was quite impossible to get a handle on with such a small field. However, it was a breakthrough event for kehmesis and MUTC — he finally snagged his first :1st:.

Magic Menagerie – Mono-Color in Future Extended

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Magic Menagerie makes another of its sporadic appearances in honor of PDCMagic.com’s debut. This time my focus shifts back to Future Extended, where we have recently seen multiple successes by mono-color decks. What advantages and disadvantages do these decks have over more common multi-color decks? How are these advantages and disadvantages different in Future Extended than they are in Standard, where mono-color decks are rarely seen? Find those answers and more inside, as I break down what makes a mono-color deck tick!

TWIFE #4 – Power Decks

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Welcome to This Week in Future Extended, an article series intended to follow the Future Extended metagame as seen through XPDC and UPDC events in the Lorwyn Season.
“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” — that seemed to be the credo of a fair number of players at XPDC 1.03, with Spore Cry and Xtra Crispy (strangely) being played in multiples, Affinity and Martyr Control hiding in dark corners, and a deftly-piloted Orzhov Blink and a weenie-heavy Blue Beats variant soaring their way to the top of the heap. On Sunday, the Izzet Boilerworks were hoppin’, and control was back in a big way — especially the Raspberry kind.
Put on your berets, Princes and other Paupers, and we’ll have a look at this week’s metagame and also talk a bit about the Future Extended format as a whole, looking at what I’ll call the “Power Decks” of the format.

TWIFE #3

Welcome to This Week in Future Extended, an article series intended to follow the Future Extended metagame as seen through XPDC and UPDC events in the Lorwyn Season.
Surprise, surprise… the XPDC metagame took a turn for the Sap-unfriendly, and I got out just in the nick of time! An exciting week for Future Extended, as Kaityson36 sealed the deal and snagged Affinity its first gold medal at XPDC 1.02, and on Sunday, amidst a swarm of Saprolings enough to sicken anyone with any sense, the B/G incarnation “Prison Yard” piloted by Eegag made a triumphant UPDC debut.
Let’s do some analysis of the metagame and see where trends are pointing going into the holiday week.

TWIFE #2

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Welcome to This Week in Future Extended, an article series intended to follow the Future Extended metagame as seen through XPDC and UPDC events in the Lorwyn Season.
With 3 (and soon 4) events under our belts, it’s time to dive into the metagame and see what’s going on. We’ll also take a look at the first Power Rankings of this season, relying on Eegag’s old formula for the time being.

TWIFE #1

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Welcome to This Week in Future Extended, an article series intended to follow the Future Extended metagame as seen through XPDC and UPDC events in the Lorwyn Season. As we went to press this week, no Future Extended tournament has yet been played in the new season, but we still have a lot to talk about.
This article will cover:
1. Where XPDC Season 0 left the Future Extended format…
2. What Lorwyn can do for Future Extended…
3. Archetypes to watch…
Read on, gentle Pauper.

Start Playing Golgari!

Friday, October 5th, 2007

So they want to blink, do they? How about some instant-speed removal? And they want to drop a Fetters on your finisher? How about sacrificing it to gain 2 life instead? And the best part is, after all the teeth-gnashing and hand-raping is over, at the end of your opponent’s turn, you pay XBB and get a whole handful of creatures to unleash the following turn.
These are the possibilities available to the Golgari mage in Future Extended. With so many half-finished archetypes lingering in the annuls of Standard PDC history, how much longer will XPDC have to wait before the rot farmers start reaping the Harvest their Standard counterparts have sown?
