Silver Lining #1

I had so much fun writing yesterday’s column on Standard decks — and I have to admit, I was also a little disappointed in the lack of Lorwyn I saw — that I felt inspired to do it again!
…only this time, I needed a different angle. Top decks get plenty of press. I can easily read about those decks by clicking the trophies on the front page of the site (as long as they find their way into Gatherling). No, I wanted to provide something new. I needed another slant.
Then it hit me. I thought about how frustrating it is to make it all the way to the finals only to have your moment of glory snuffed out like a candle. I realized that the second place decklists are a lot harder to find and get a lot less attention (generally). They also tend to be a bit more adventurous, on average, than the garden variety metagame dominators that tend to come in first place. I knew I had found my subject, my angle, my article:
The few, the frustrated, the silver medalists.
