The Monday Mulligan: Shadowmoor, what to get?

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

I will not list every card in Shadowmoor, as always there are a lot of bad and unplayable cards here. I’ll try to go over every card that has potential or seems to have but hasn’t. A full visual spoiler of Shadowmoor Commons (and Lorwyn/Morningtide) can be found here. Read on!
Disclaimer: I’m talking about Standard playability only!

Shadowmoor: Polyjak’s Picks

There hasn’t been a full-scale review of the commons of Shadowmoor yet (at least not to my knowledge), and as the would-be purveyor of all things block, I thought I would take a little time to address some of the choice offerings of the newest block, a new member of the Lorwyn Block, and of course for all of PDC as well. Everybody in PDC judges these commons differently, using the lens of their preferred formats to make the calls, so it will serve you well to bear in mind that I am a player who enjoys smaller, more limited cardpools where new cards have a bigger impact. Therefore, my enthusiasm for some of these cards may not carry over into Extended or Classic. But I’m sure you’ll enjoy the read anyway!

The Monday Mulligan #6: Championship, From The Losers Bracket

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Garfield Monday (2).jpg
Last monday was a big day for MPDC: The Season One Championships! Kehmesis did at the MPDC Championship what he couldn’t do at SPDC World’s: take Storm Control to the top. The top placers included other great players and/or regular names such as Kingritz, icarodx and kaityson36. Read on for the coverage of all the semi- and final matches, or even better, watch these great games yourselves with the video coverage! What about my accomplishments, you ask? Well, the title isn’t fictional.
On top of the Championship, the last part of the Morningtide overview, Red, is included, while the Mic and the Spotlight are postponed due to the Championship coverage.

The Monday Mulligan #5: Can Red Decks Win?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Garfield Monday (2).jpg
Storm Control takes its seventh standard trophy home, winning MPDC 1.16. This time it was piloted by its creator kehmesis, who beat MPDC regular ZeroFusion with Use UR Illusion in the finals. It is blue’s turn in the Morningtide review series and the Mic is passed to Kingritz, who shares some awesome intel on Kingdrifter and does his own Morningtide review. The Spotlight is aimed at Red Deck Wins, the forgotten aggro deck in standard.

The Monday Mulligan #4: Storming Through Standard

What We Have For You Today

Last monday’s MPDC (with a turn-out of a whopping 22 players!) was won by everyone’s favorite (and only) MPDC article writer, myself, playing kehmesis’ version of UR Storm Control (which is featured in the Spotlight), defeating mikec_00 piloting Use UR Illusion in the finals. On top of this I’ll continue to look into Morningtime with standards least played color: Green. Will Morningtide change this? Last, but not least, an interview with kehmesis, his first article feature after “going nuts”!

What We Have For You Today

This week I’ll have to listen to Gun’s and Roses more. The article will contain the continuation of the Morningtide overview, this time with the color best at destroying you footware; the color of the swamp (Don’t step in!). MPDC was won by jtamaro with an old favorite, White Weenie, beating a modified version of UR Storm Control, played by ChronicHeaves in the finals. The deck in the spotlight this week will be Grimdrifter, and the mic is passed to RaiserUK, who gives many interesting answers about, among others, his ability to go to multiple top spots while being a newcomer. The Monday Mulligan #2: I Don’t Hate Mondays!

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Garfield Monday (2).jpg

What We Have For You Today

In todays Mulligan, I’ll talk about last mondays MPDC, which was won by 53N531 playing UR Illusions, beating hurriboy with his Sticks ‘n Stones list in the finals. The mic is in the hands of Sensei this week, talking about the state of the meta and the upcomming Morningtide release. This weeks winning MPDC list will be in the spotlight, having multiple pilots and top places in the last two weeks. I am also starting my five part “comprehensive” Morningtide standard overview, with the most worthwhile white commons for standard. The delay of both MTGO3.0 and Morningtide will give me enough time to finish this before we can flip the cards through our digital fingers.

Future Sight: A Review in Commons

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

We’re back, and we’re reviewing Future Sight! I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for this article since the day Future Sight was announced… and Eegag and I intend not to disappoint!

Eegag: Yay Future Sight!
Polyjak: Indeed. A set full of cards sure to shape the Pauper Standard metagame… and there’s even a few that seem capable of affecting Pauper Classic…
Eegag: Definitely. Future Sight is a solid set across the board, with many hidden gems. It is difficult to select only ten to discuss, because there are so many intriguing cards.
Polyjak: But that’s exactly what we’ve done, isn’t it Eegag? We’ve each created a list of 10 of the most intriguing cards in the set… heavy on the personal bias, and heavy on the fun.
Eegag: Yes. This is in no way my Future Sight “best of” list, but these are cards that, I believe, warrant discussion.
Polyjak: Then, without futher ado, let’s discuss.

I: Farewell, Kamigawa

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

The Kamigawa block inspired a great deal of hatred from many players with its relatively low power level, insular mechanics, and strange Japanese-tinged flavor. However, in the midst of the dross were some stand-out cards that had a big influence on the Standard format, in Pauper as well as in regular Magic. This article looks at the commons that made the biggest impact and will be missed in the new format.
