I will not list every card in Shadowmoor, as always there are a lot of bad and unplayable cards here. I’ll try to go over every card that has potential or seems to have but hasn’t. Disclaimer: I’m talking about Standard playability only!
Due to the casual event at MPDC this week (which was incredibly buggy but a lot of fun) there is no Standard metagame to discuss. Therefore I will go over all decks that have done well in Standard last season and what Shadowmoor cards you will need to acquire. This way you will have some small hints to the new Standard.
Most of this you, as regulars, will already know. But I’m trying to make something I can point new players to if they want to know what to expect. I also used a lot of old material to describe the decks, because I talked about almost every deck in Standard at some point.
Thirteen. Thirteen players attended the MPDC Season 2 Championship. We had twentyfive last week, why the drop in numbers? Well, never mind, the event was still a blast. Because of real life issues I couldn’t host, so stiffdiddypinky substituted for me, while I registered twenty minutes late. Hosting didn’t obstruct his play though, because stiff won the Championship, piloting White Weenie to a 4-1 record. This season’s runner up was yogev, who played Elves! to their best performance yet, a silver 3-1 record.
Also in this edition of The Monday Mulligan; no more “maby” instead of “maybe” and no more “of coarse” instead of “of course”!
MPDC 2′s last hooray was a beauty. Twentyfive players showed up, one late, and three rounds of Swiss and a top eight was declared. After the dust settled eight decks were left: Topping that heap was phantomphage with Dark Evocation. This being his first MPDC, one of the first things he asked was if winning the event would get him an invite into the Championship. Sure it will, I said, finding the changes for a newcommer slim. Six hours later, he got himself an invite.
Rebels took two play-off places, two top eigth, during the last two weeks. This is deserving of a look into Spills creation.
It seems last weeks Mulligan didn’t go unnoticed or that some other people had the same insight as I did: Storm Control is seriously underplayed in the meta. Not this week though, with four out of four SC made play-offs and both a mirror in the semi’s and the finals. Two White Weenie decks faced eachother in MPDC 2.09′s finals yesterday, with Mr Moto coming out on top, leaving newbie Spring Snow behind. Congratulations on your first trophy Moto!
It seems the “improved” version of MTGO has hit us hard. I thought MPDC was on the rise again after the first event after downtime hit an all time season low, but this week there were a lousy 15 players at registration, forcing a top 4 instead of 8. That doesn’t mean the players themselves were lousy, with relative newcommer Nate316 taking home the trophy with an old Timespiral block favorite: Jungle Storm. Regular attendees included stiffdiddypinky (second with WW), frycek (top 4 with Red Deck Wins) and wildman4420 (top 4 with Burnt Blink).
A new installment in the Mulligan series is long overdue, so without further non-sense: MM#11!
Yesterday, I got myself my third shiny MPDC Trophy banner, piloting Red Deck Wins and beating JMason with Storm Control in the finals. Reflecting on past winners that haven’t been featured here: v2′s last MPDC winner was ninruin3r with Blue Beats, while v3′s first (and relativily small) event was won by hokusai22 with WW.
