XPDC 101 -- Decks From the Past for Future Extended

It's closer than you think, boys and girls. The FUTURE, I mean. The Future Extended PDC tournament. XPDC. Totally uncharted waters.

To whom will this format appeal? Those who prefer a more limited cardpool than the one offered by Classic events yet want more options than those provided by the small cardpool of Standard.

Future Extended is a stepping-stone to Classic for any Standard players who are familiar enough with PDC to begin branching out.

It's entirely possible that some decks ported directly from Standard will be competitive in the Future Extended format. However, there are far more options available to FutEx Paupers than their Standard counterparts.

Take, for instance, this deck I dredged up from the deep, dark annals of PDC history. It appears as though this could be a Kamigawa Block deck, as it's composed almost entirely of Spirits and Arcanes. This deck will be legal in Future Extended, at XPDC.

R/W SPIRITCRAFT
White_djinn, Sunday PDC, 4th place

9 Plains
8 Mountain
4 Boros Garrison

4 Frostling
4 Lantern Kami
4 Hearth Kami
4 Kami of Ancient Law
4 Blademane Baku
4 Waxmane Baku
3 Kabuto Moth

4 Glacial Ray
4 Lava Spike
4 Spiritual Visit

Sideboard
4 Skyknight Legionnaire
4 Terashi's Grasp
4 Thundersong Trumpeter
3 Faith's Fetters

Perhaps a name like Baku Blitzkrieg would be more snazzy, but I certainly can't argue against the functionality of White_Djinn's title. Anyway... looking at this list, it's hard to imagine it being able to hold its own in a field full of non-Kamigawa cards... but that doesn't mean it's impossible. The Waxmane Baku provides excellent board control, the Splice engine promotes card advantage (a rarity for RW), Spiritual Visit provides lots of little blockers or potential attackers, and the Blademane's pump ability works quite nicely on a 1/1 flying spirit in a sky full of tapped down blockers.

I wonder why Blessed Breath didn't make it into this deck or sideboard. That card is awesome.

Kamigawa's Splice + Time Spiral's Storm spells could usher in some kind of RW Token frenzy, and with all the mass pump spells available in those colors (add Path of Anger's Flame to the current list), you've got a more fiery variation of a deck we know works pretty well!

This is just one of the many decklists I'll be bringing you as we inch our way closer to the inaugural XPDC event, 0.04, on September 12. Stay tuned!
