SPDC Season Points

SPDC opted for a new season point system. It took a while to take a decision, and we apologize for that. If you'd like to know where you stand this season and why the changes were made, check inside for more!

The main reason the point system is changing is to save time. Many members of the community do their part to make this community what it is and it can be extremely time consuming for some.

Simply hosting a few events in a season is quite the dedication. As you all know, Icarodx has done more than his share for the community and the season points update were becoming too much for him, especially when many events needed to be updated at once.

That's when I realized that I was already doing the work. So why do it twice?

By gathering the data for the power rankings, I was already gathering what I thought could become season points. By picking this new system for season points, there was no need for additional work. On top of that, I personally think that they are a better reflection of the most successful AND active players this season, by opposition as the most active players, which the old system rewarded greatly.

Basically, we reward players for making the participation rounds, not unlike the current power ranking system. In fact, they use pretty much the same point system.

So how does it work?

It's quite simple:

1st place: 10 points
2nd place: 7 points
Top 4 : 4 points
Top 8 : 2 points
Participation: 1 point

Note that making the playoff rounds will give you points for your respective position as well as a participation point. So, basically, finishing in the top 8 is worth 3 points.

Season Rankings:

The top 32 players at the end of the season will be invited to the championship event.

Starting now, I will update the season points in my weekly tournament report so you can all keep track of how many points you need in order to make the championship event.

While the base is the same, the final result of the new system is very diferent from Power Ratings.

Mainly because season points will ever be cumulative and we grant participation points, what means that someone just need to participate regularly and go top once or twice to have an edge over people that just participate and do average and people that made a top in the whole season.

The people that we would like to see at worlds will still be there and, in the end, the only change is the order of players. That for instance gives more meaning to top5 or top10 IMO.

Normally I dislike fixing what isnīt broke, and many people know that I like very much the old system, but kehm did an excelent work convicing me, basically by volunteering while maintaining status quo.

Itīs an elegant system, I like it. Congrats on the idea, kehm. Canīt wait for the next report.

King, I would love to see what your formulas are. However, I don't have this data for SPDC and it would probably be too much work right now.

For next season, we will definitely consider ALT PDC's system.

For now, I guess it's kind of a band aid plan. I think the results are pretty good anyway. Participation is rewarded more than it actually seems.

Someone playing who played in 7 events out of 11 so far, and never made top 8 is above the championship cut. At the same time, someone who made 2nd place just once also is above the championship cut.

So both participation and results are considered for the championship event.

I tend to think that Season Points should stick to a focus on rewarding participation, whereas Power Rankings should focus solely on success. Alt PDC has a wonderful system for this, including a formula for Power Rankings that appears highly accurate to my eyes, and I commend it to your consideration.

It does seem like more work to do two separate computations, but we have a simple Excel spreadsheet that does BOTH of these computations automatically, using nothing more than raw win/loss data from the events -- something I'd probably want to keep track of anyway.

thanks kehm, the points system was starting to drag behind, and i wasn't sure if someone was doing anything about it to get it all kosher and keeping it so.

Please post a comment if you think you did not receive the correct amount of points. They should be easy to keep track of, but keeping track of more than a hundred players can lead to mistakes.
