BPDC 1.04: RobE Upholds Status Quo; Wins

Well, we three ex-Princes brought the noise, but the funk still won out. We've had a pretty back-and-forth metagame, with and decks taking the cheese in turns. But the time has come for something or something -- or maybe even something -- to get its queso on.

Metagame Report

As you can see, six iterations of Hulk Splice showed up, but all six of them went to bed early. made a stronger showing, sending 100% of its pilots to playoff rounds. However, it looks like the surprise showing was from , an archetype we'd written off a couple weeks earlier. Two copies of Blue Flame made it to the Top 4, showing that Frostling + Ninja of the Deep Hours does indeed = a good deck.

Another deck that has escaped most BPDC players' notice is Shimmering Spirits, piloted mostly by WoCoNation. This deck has great game against aggressive green and red-green decks and should be seeing play in greater numbers.

While black certainly does like to play alone in this block, it doesn't necessarily have to. Two other decks deserve special attention, and those are Black Ice and Vectors of Disease (also known as Waxy Doom).

Our final deck of note for today is Critical Mass.

The Kamigawa Block Pauper metagame is still largely unexplored, and these decks represent some of the format's pilgrims. I see them as uniquely poised to threaten the status quo of and , and I suspect that one of these new archetypes will be the victor at BPDC 1.05. Stay tuned, or write history yourself!

Special note: BPDC 1.05 will be DOUBLE-POINTS week! If your point total needs a shot in the arm, you'll definitely want to head out this coming Monday! With the invitation-only finale fast approaching, your point total is definitely worth defending! Be there!!

I expect to do more analysis in future articles. However, this week I just wanted to get something up and to share some of the cutting-edge decks with enough time for players to pick them up and try them out before DOUBLE-POINTS week this Monday.
